On February 8, 2024, the Mechanical Engineering Department at Government Polytechnic, Jamnagar, hosted a seminar on the Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) for diploma students. Led by Dr. H. J. Parekh, an expert in innovation and education policy, the event aimed to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among students and guide them in transforming innovative ideas into viable start-ups. The seminar, organized by the department and reported by V. R. Maniar, emphasized the role of SSIP in supporting student innovation through financial and infrastructural resources.
Dr. Parekh introduced the objectives of SSIP, a Gujarat government initiative, highlighting its focus on nurturing innovative ideas, providing financial aid for prototype development, and promoting a culture of entrepreneurship in educational institutions. He outlined the stages of innovation—idea generation, prototyping, testing, and implementation—using examples like renewable energy devices and automation systems relevant to mechanical engineering. The seminar detailed SSIP’s support mechanisms, including access to incubation centers, technical mentorship, and funding opportunities, with real-world success stories of SSIP-backed start-ups. An interactive Q&A session allowed students to discuss identifying viable ideas, overcoming entrepreneurial challenges, and balancing academics with start-up ambitions. Dr. Parekh’s practical advice and examples inspired students to pursue innovation with minimal financial risk. The session enhanced students’ understanding of SSIP’s framework, equipped them with knowledge of start-up development stages, and motivated them to address real-world challenges through innovative solutions. The Mechanical Engineering Department acknowledged the administration’s support and Dr. Parekh’s guidance, noting the seminar’s success in aligning academic learning with entrepreneurial aspirations and encouraging students to leverage SSIP resources for future projects.
